What is the ScoopFree Litter Box?
The ScoopFree Litter Box is a self-cleaning litter device that is easy to set up and use. It’s equipped with motion sensors that detect any cat activity within the unit. It also has a health counter with display that tells you how many times your cat have used the box.
Once your cat is done doing her private business, the rake timer will start counting down for 5, 10, or 20 minutes. You will be the one to set the desired rake delay. During this time period, the crystal litter will start absorbing both odor and moisture to dry up your cat’s waste. When the countdown finishes without your cat reusing the unit, the rake will start to sweep through the litter, pushing the waste into the covered waste compartment.
The ScoopFree Ultra model – reviewed here – has all the bells and whistles, including the Health Counter monitor. This device records the number of times your cat used the box. Why is that important to monitoring Kitty’s health? Well, as you learn the litter box usage patterns – i.e. how many times a day your cat uses the box – any change from that pattern could indicate a health problem. For example, an increase in litter box usage could indicate an upset tummy or a urinary tract problem.
Not being able to monitor your cat litter box usage is one of the disadvantages of using a self-cleaning box. The ScoopFree Ultra model has found a good way to overcome that.

ScoopFree Litter Box FAQ
When should you change the tray?
The unit has a light indicator that displays the number of cycles (rakes) done since the last reset. There is actually no universal answer to the question as cats tend to have different potty behaviors. However, the recommended transition time is every 100 rakes or 30 days for one (1) cat. Users with two (2) cats find themselves changing the tray every 2 weeks on average.
The crystal litter that comes with the package is effective in regulating the smell to a certain extent. So apart from the advised transition routine, another way to notify you it’s time to change the tray is when you start noticing the smell – it could be every 80 rakes or so, depending on your cat’s use.
Do I really have to use the crystal litter that comes with the package?
Yes – as much as possible. The crystal litter is actually effective in dehydrating wet discharges as well as absorbing foul odor. All users recommend using the crystal litter that comes with it. What’s more, you should NOT use a clumping litter because the unit is designed for crystal litters only.
What’s the difference between regular, Ultra, and Top-Entry Ultra?
The Ultra is typically larger than the original (regular) and it has three (3) additional features – health counter, adjustable rake delay, and privacy hood. The Top-Entry Ultra is basically just an Ultra with a different opening which is at the top (hence the name).
What users liked about the ScoopFree Litter Box Ultra
A lot of people are satisfied with the litter box particularly the crystal litter. One user reported –
The crystals work so well, I didn’t think they were using the box, I thought they were just going in and out. I had to witness them using it to believe it. No smell at all!! I will be buying another down the road.
Longtime users also expressed their praise of the system’s loyalty through the years –
I have been using ScoopFree Ultra Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes since 2006, and believe they are the best product of their kind on the market. When used properly, this one is an outstanding litter box.
Another user is witness to the machine’s odor-control ability and said –
I was pleasantly surprised with how incredibly easy this box is. I have always lived in pretty small apartments and tend to have guests in and out. I hated having a litter box out & of course hate any smell. I keep this one in my guest bathroom now & it almost doesn’t matter – there is never ANY smell because everything is contained in that covered front area.
What users didn’t like about the ScoopFree Litter Box Ultra
A lot of negative feedback seems to be due to the fact some users had unrealistic expectations paired with improper use. There are also users who were disappointed with other features like this one –
The smell is quite bad after the cat does its business, but after it runs it goes away. By far tracking is the biggest problem with this item, I’ve tried just about everything to eliminate it but no luck.
Another user reported a similar issue regarding litter tracking and added a suggestion –
Crystal litter gets tracked everywhere! This is true regardless of litter box though. I highly recommend getting a rubber mat that catches litter.
ScoopFree Litter Box Usage Tips
- Place this new unit beside your cat’s current litter-box to allow her to adjust
- Add some of the new crystal litter to the current box. If you happen to be using crystal litter in the old setup, consider adding some of the old litter to the new box.
If you’re looking for an automatic rake system, the ScoopFree Litter Box Ultra is one of the best choices. It comes with crystal litter formulated to defeat odor and is five (5) times more effective than conventional clumping litter and clay variants. Bottom-line, this one is a highly recommend efficient system! As far as the human in the loop is concerned, the litter box cleaning frequency is reduced – while the box itself stays clean!
